04 / faq
Short answers to the questions that come up most.
No. It's a reversible encoding. Anyone can decode it. Use AES or similar when you need confidentiality.
Base64URL (RFC 4648 §5) replaces + / with - _ and usually omits =. Use it in URLs, filenames and JWTs.
Padding to a multiple of 4 chars. 1 leftover byte → XX==, 2 → XXX=. Most decoders accept unpadded input.
4 chars per 3 bytes = ~33% overhead. 1 MB in → ~1.37 MB out.
Whitespace in the input, std/url alphabet mismatch, or binary (PNG, ZIP) rendered as text. Strip, switch alphabet, or save as a file.
No. base64s is built to run 100% client-side. There is no backend for your data.
